Overview
Geotechnics’ is one of the UK’s leading specialists in ground investigation, providing geotechnical and geoenvironmental services from desk study and investigation planning through to fieldwork, in situ and laboratory testing, factual and interpretive reporting.
With some of the industry’s most qualified and experienced engineers directing and supervising project fieldwork, we pride ourselves on using the techniques best suited to the ground conditions and the project specifics. Services include trial pits, boreholes, specialist in situ testing, sampling and monitoring. Samples are tested in our internal, UKAS-accredited laboratory with engineering interpretation turning field data into information that can guide decision making for design, procurement and construction teams.
Established in 1983, Geotechnics has completed thousands of ground investigations including some of the largest infrastructure projects across the UK. With over 100 highly skilled geologists, engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff working from offices in Chester, Coventry, Exeter and Leeds we support ground investigation projects across the UK and boast an in house, UKAS-accredited laboratory which was named Laboratory of the Year at the 2023 Lab Awards.
Nationwide reach, one accountable team
At Geotechnics we always aim to use our closest office and most appropriate resource for a ground investigation project, whilst always keeping the work under one coordinated technical and commercial structure.
From first brief to decision ready report
1. Desk study and investigation planning
Before any intrusive work is arranged, our team will always establish why the investigation is needed, what decision it must support and both when and where the information will be used. Geological data, site history, environmental background, previous investigations and practical site constraints are always reviewed first, giving any scope of work a much more informed starting point.
Depending on the requirement, our desk study reporting can include a conceptual site model, preliminary contamination and geotechnical risk assessments and recommendations for Phase II investigation, instrumentation and monitoring.
2. Engineer-led fieldwork
At Geotechnics we pride ourselves on being engineering led rather than determined by a fleet of rigs. Because our model is deliberately asset-light and engineering-led, plant and specialist resources can be selected for the appropriate site rather than forcing every project into a standard methodology.
All fieldwork is directed and supervised by our own in-house, highly qualified, and experienced engineers, ensuring all safety and data quality. Should the field evidence change the ground model, our project team will always explain our findings, present the available options and highlight any cost or programme effect before recommending any change to scope.
3. Connected laboratory testing
Samples are tested in our UKAS-accredited, in-house laboratory* which can be used as either part of a wider investigation project or as a standalone service. The laboratory undertakes soil classification, strength and compressibility testing and soil behaviour testing relevant to foundations, slopes, roads and earthworks. Environmental, contamination and waste analysis is undertaken at one of our approved UKAS accredited environmental laboratories.
Keeping field observations, sample quality, test scheduling and engineering interpretation within one business ensures all laboratory results are read in the context in which each sample was recovered.
4. Reporting and interpretation
We pride ourselves in delivering reporting and interpretation models that provide our clients with a clear and accurate account of what has been established, what is still uncertain and what the evidence means for the next design, procurement or delivery decision.
* Laboratory Accreditation Number 1365.
