Danger! Danger! High Voltage!

All over the UK, you will find a wide range of power lines: from huge steel pylons to smaller wooden poles. Any one of these could pack a powerful punch – even a smaller pole could carry 11,000 volts. That is nearly 50 times the power from a normal plug socket!

It is important to stay safe around electrical lines. You don’t even need to touch one to cause a problem. At such a high voltage, electricity can jump across small gaps. This means that you could be in for a shock, even without making contact with the wire.

In our new GO SAFE campaign, we will look at how you can use exclusion zones to keep you safe around overhead electrical lines. Remember: always assume an overhead wire is live – it’s better to be safe than sorry!
